INDULGENCES spinologyby randy hope Rooted in the music of his native Puerto Rico, and influenced by heavy progressive
house sounds, DJ Luis Perez is quickly becoming one of America’s hottest gay enter- tainers, spinning his fresh beats from venues like The House of Blues in San Diego to the live television broadcast of the 2009 Miss California USA pageant. In 2008 and 2009, he was hand-picked to DJ the national finals of the America’s Gay Bachelor contest. Born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, DJ Luis Perez grew up on the east coast and started spinning early, dropping beats for his rapper friends while still in high school. Now he’s spinning his own unique brand of mixes. Perez creates a big sound, merging anthems with tribal rhythms, feeling the crowd and building the energy slow and steady. He likes to get his crowds up, lead them to a musical ledge, gets them to jump and finally help them to soar with a loud and original mix of synths and drums. Based in San Diego, Luis Perez is currently the DJ in residence at Spin nightclub and
Rich’s San Diego. Spin Nightclub is host for what is set to be one of the hottest New Year’s Eve celebrations when Bill Hardt presents New Year’s Eve 2012. DJ Luis Perez will spin into 2012 by opening and closing the event as he hits the decks on the main
floor. The Rage Monthly caught up with DJ Luis Perez in between sets in the DJ booth.
So how did it all begin? Hard to say how it all began, cause I’ve been DJing in a few stages in my life. The most
recent began right after college because I know had time to dedicate to DJing and with the advancement in technology, it made it much easier to get back into. What gave you the initial push to pursue your passion as a DJ? Well it’s something I’ve always enjoyed doing. I can say my boyfriend gave me the
push to pursue it. How would you describe your style? This question always gets me cause I don’t like to pigeonhole myself to certain style.
Others have described my style as “vocal house with heavy beats.” What’s the best event you’ve played? I would have to say the Bill Hardt San Diego Pride Parties.
You’ll be joined at Spin on New Year’s Eve by international DJ/Producer Francesco Pagano. Have you gone international and if so what countries have you spun? Yes I have gone international, I have spun in Sydney and Perth Australia a couple of
times now and also played in Shanghai. So I guess I can start using “International DJ” in front of my name now. (Laughing) You’ve definitely had some growth over the past couple years. What was the biggest highlight of 2011 for you? It’s been a remarkable year and I’ve had a few big highlights in 2011. I played in
Sydney Australia for Mardi Gras. Also went to Shanghai for the first time. Played Los Angeles Pride alongside DJ/Producer Alexander and got to headline the Masterbeat Halloween Afterhours party in Los Angeles. Well that is pretty remarkable and hard to top! What do you foresee for DJ Luis Perez in 2012? For 2012 I foresee getting to play at some more major events, as well as taking it to
the next level and start producing. Are there other DJs you rate or look up to? So many DJ’s have inspired me and I look up to but to name a few Ralphi Rosario,

Wayne G, Alexander, Peter Rauhofer, Eddie X., Phil B. When you play, is the set pre-planned? No. I have in my mind songs that I am going to play or would like to work into my set,
but it’s never pre-planned. If you could spin anywhere, where would you choose? I would like to spin at the Black and Blue Festival in Montreal.
You are stuck on a desert island and you can only have three albums. They are… No Doubt’sTragic Kingdom, Michael Jackson’sThriller and Jennifer LopezOn the 6th. Anything else you want to say or any shouts? Just want to say thanks to everyone who’s supported me and to those who come to
the events I play. It’s really a special feeling to see people having a good time and enjoy- ing themselves. I look forward to welcoming the New Year at Spin Nightclub alongside Pagano for the Bill Hardt Presents NYE 2012.
