Additionally, during 2011 we sat down with and shined the spotlight on some of the hottest and most well-respected artists and entertainers who graced the pages of the publication. For those who might not have caught the original Spotlights that helped make Rage shine, we bring you 11 excerpts that caught our attention this past year.
WHAT THE 2011 HEADLINES READ…
THE DEMISE OF ‘DON’T ASK, DON’T TELL’ This year we saw the certification of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t
Tell” repeal by President Obama, implemented in September to allow LGBT servicemembers to serve openly and honestly. This marked the final critical strike against a policy whose demise couldn’t come fast enough. 18 years of witch-hunts cost thousands of exemplary servicemembers their careers, once again proving there are very personal and costly conse- quences to discrimination.
HEAD-TURNERS
JOAN RIVERS, JANUARY 2011 “Oh, honey are you out of your mind? I am disgusted
by the pretentiousness of people who self-identify themselves as artists. Oh please! Do they do needlepoint or make candles? To them I say, ‘Shut the hell up!’“ Entertainment legend Joan Rivers responded in Rage Monthly’s January 2011 issue, when asked if she sees herself as an artist. Noted for introducing female angst into stand-up comedy, Rivers has always been very open about her personal life throughout her career. Here’s what she had to say when asked why she’s left no other “Joan”—no private self—lurking beneath the mask. “Because as a comedian there is no mask. You really put it out there. As an actor you can go into a part and play Jesus Christ on stage, yet in real life you’re the meanest son of a bitch. But if you are a good actor, they say it’s wonderful. A comedian, however, you stand there and you talk to them, and you really talk about your life. So as a comedian they really learn a lot more about you—if you’re a good comedian—than they do about an actor. We really haven’t got a clue what Angelina Jolie is like. Really, not a clue...except that she buys all these horrible little children.”

RUPAUL, FEBRUARY 2011 “Easter is my favorite of all because the
idea of a resurrection is so beautiful to me. Drag in general is like a resurrection of the spirit,” explained, RuPaul, when asked what holiday holds most depth and meaning to the Queen of Drag in The Rage Monthly’s February 2011 issue. She also kept it real speaking about her daily meditation. “I get up very early in the morning and meditate at 6:30 a.m. and then I’ll go on a hike in these beautiful hills in L.A. and listen to my music. I just need that foundation so I can remember what’s real—what I’m here for.” RuPaul recently concluded her third season of, RuPaul’s Drag Race, on Logo. We’ll be sure to stay tuned for a “hopeful” Season 4 ofRuPaul’s Drag Race, which is set to star San Diego’s own Chad Michaels – it would be quite the drag if this race were to, “Saché Away!”
