Champions of Hayes

Hayes Village Association, established in 1933 when Hayes was expanding rapidly, has been championing the village for more than 75 years. Chairman Shirley Savage and press officer Stuart Howe, pictured by Keith Larby, report on the association’s latest activities and provide a little history.

THE organisation is here to “protect the interests of residents and preserve the amenities” and has taken an active part in promoting Hayes, both locally and in the wider community. Currently 2,500 households out of a total of some 4,000 support the association. The HVA Review, published quarterly, is our first line of communication, informing members of major issues affecting Hayes. One major area of work involves monitoring local planning issues. Here, the association has to tread a fine line between appearing negative in its approach and failing to fulfil its aims. The association welcomes appropriate development, well aware that Hayes must move with the times if it is to continue to thrive. During 2011, and for the second time in recent years, we

have made Bromley Council fully aware of the community's opposition to any potential closure of Hayes Library. The association has also this year voiced its opposition to the proposed extension of operating hours at Biggin Hill

Airport during the London Olympics, and is currently closely monitoring the development of Hayes Place flats to ensure that the plans submitted do not adversely affect the local community. Socially, the association has organised large fairs on Hayes Common to celebrate its 60th anniversary in 1993, and the Millennium in 2000. More recently, for five years, the association has organised the highly successful annual Hayes Fair, held in Hayes Library Gardens, and donated all profits it earned to charities.

In 2008, the association celebrated its 75th anniversary with an expanded fair, arranged with other local organisations, and held in the grounds of Baston School.
