Pop into the Pop in Parlour


THE West Wickham Pop In Parlour reopened in Medhurst Hall, Sussex Road, West Wickham in January and has proved to be a roaring success. It is open Tuesday-Friday each week


from 10am-1.30pm (last orders at 1pm), selling refreshments and providing the opportunity for elderly people to meet and make new friends. Once threatened with closure, many regular customers were saddened by


the thought of losing touch with friends and so a group of enthusiastic volunteers formed a committee and now run the service independently. There are no paid members of staff – all the volunteers give their time freely. The relaxed surroundings of the carpeted hall is a welcoming environment which lends itself to making new friends. A wide variety of food and drink is on sale. Some people just have a cup of tea or coffee, others come for a mid morning snack, or for lunch. Most people find something on the menu to suit their taste. Chairman of the


volunteer committee, Beryl Talbot, explained: “Our customers are mainly from Hayes, West Wickham, Bromley and Croydon. Fortunately we are


just off West Wickham High Street so it is easy for people to reach us by bus or by car. The 119 and 194 buses stop just a couple of minutes walk away”. She continued: “As well as our every


day menu we organise special lunches to celebrate events such as the Royal Wedding and Ascot Ladies’ Day, we welcome ideas from our customers and aim to offer good food and on these occasions entertainment.” The most recent ‘special event’ was held on June 16, Ascot Ladies Day, and many of the customers dressed for the occasion (see picture).


And it seems the service is a hit with its customers. Hayes resident Brenda Cordingley said: “I came on my own and sat on a table with another lady who was also on her own and we just got chatting. It was terrific and it happened that I chose the day that had my favourite meal on the menu: gammon with pease pudding!” For more information on the pop in, call Beryl Talbot on 020 8325 3063.
