ation leading the charge, the city moved to offer free metered street parking downtown during December several years ago. [Associa- tion Chairman Bob] Usher said that downtown businesses saw a ‘noticeable boost’ every December.…” Well, duh, could a small holiday where people give gifts in
December have anything to do with the boost? I wonder if anyone compared the Decembers with paid parking vs. the Decembers with “free” parking. Of the concern that, with free parking, local employees will take
the spaces? “That’s not a huge concern for Usher, who said most retailers have a good handle on their staff and respect that the park- ing is for customers.” Yeah, right. I love the line from the article from the city’s manager of park-
ing and traffic signals: “There’s no such thing as ‘free’ parking.” Parking verite.
The Corps is Mother; the Corps is Father
(Posted Oct. 25) Some of you must remember the cult science fiction TV series
“Babylon 5” and Senior Psi Cop Bester, Psi Corp’s famous field operative. Bester was played byWalter Koenig, the same actor who played Pavel Chekov on the original “Star Trek.” I was reading through the November 2011 issue of PT and there, on Page 38, was something so haunting I just had to stare at it. The headline on this
post should give you a hint. If you don’t remember “Babylon 5,” I understand; if you don’t remember “Star Trek,” you have really lost your way. I wonder if Walter Koenig has a brother or maybe a cousin?
Check out the picture. And then look at the logo…OMG! Live long and prosper.

But in some, like mine, the driveways are 30 feet long or more, and you can park there without blocking either one. However, the law is the law, so back in July, to solve the sidewalk
blocking problem, the city went hog-wild and wrote tickets to every-
one.All hell broke loose, and theCityCouncil found that you canmess with folks’ taxes, but you had better notmess with their parking. There were petitions, councilmembers found themselves accost-
ed at local farmers markets, and then the famous “apron parking protest” across LA made the “LA Occupy” group look tiny in com- Continued on Page 42
