Introduction
“Construction booms as mega projects roll out”
W
hile unemployment in the UK has just hit a 17 year high (now at 8.1%, it’s highest since 1994), and the worsening and worsening economic conditions are slowing down the UK’s con-
struction industry, it’s a different story elsewhere. UK professionals within the construction and engineering
sector will fi nd that their skills are much needed in these countries, as the local labour markets fail to keep pace with the unprecedented expansion. Huge investment equals huge opportunity. More than half
the world’s planned additions to LNG capacity are under construction in Australia alone, and Australia’s total mining is tipped to more than double in the next 20 years, from 693,000 to an estimated 1.45 million. New Zealand, too, is feeling
the effects of skill shortages as the rebuild effort for Christchurch drives a new wave of job opportunities. About 20- 30,000 workers are urgently needed for the massive rebuild project and the city is already looking abroad to plug the gaps in its local workforce. In November, Opportunities

Overseas Expos will be touching down in the UK, bringing a prime opportunity for UK workers wanting to boost their salaries and further their careers abroad. Organised by Working In, the job and migration expos bring
leading employers from New Zealand, Australia and Canada on the hunt for talent across a range of sectors, from construction to IT. Hundreds of jobs will be available under the one roof, with a range of specialist construction roles that incudes Operations Managers, Engineers, Techologists, Estimators, Schedulers and Maintenance Supervisors. More than 30 employers under the banner of Opportunities
Canterbury will also attend the UK Expos on a special drive to recruit workers to help repair the city’s damaged CBD and infrastructure. “The key message we want to get out is that this is an
unprecedented situation in New Zealand,” says Alex Bouma from the newly formed Canterbury Employment Skills Board. “We’re rebuilding a whole CBD from scratch and there’s going to be a huge amount of money and opportunities here.” The Opportunities Overseas Expos will be held in London (12-
13 November) and Manchester (19-20 November), with a specialist recruitment expo in Aberdeen (16 November) for the engineering, mining and oil & gas sectors. For a list of job roles and to book tickets, visit:
