£618m ($1bn CAD) contract to build the New Oakville Hospital in Ontario. The entire build is worth £1.7bn and is expected to finish in 2015. Carillion is also involved in the build -

it will invest £28m revenue with an expected revenue of £500m over the 30 years of the contract. In 2010, Carillion set out to double its construction revenue in Canada from £500m to £1bn in the next three to five years. EllisDon also has a £68m contract to

rebuild the East Concourse of Calgary Airport which will double capacity. This runs until 2015. Davis Langdon associate Gerard Rifai

Davis Langdon says the Canadian economy has shown far greater resilience than other mature markets, including the US and the UK. “As a result of the economy’s resilience, there are excellent employment opportunities and the salaries are competitive on a global scale. While they don’t quite meet the same level when compared to the Middle East and the UK, a person can expect an excellent quality of life when considering a move to Canada, especially if you value the great outdoors.”

Australia Australia is booming, and there is a

wide choice of high profile projects to work on. One of the most unusual is the Chris

O’Brien Lifehouse, a new world-class cancer care facility. The £88m (A$142m) construction contract was awarded to Brookfield Multiplex in August, and is due to finish in mid-2013. Rider Levett Bucknall’s national

marketing manager for Australia, Carly McIver, said: “It’s going to be on one of those projects that’s going to hit news headlines across Australia.” Rider Levett Bucknall is also advising

on Barangaroo, a £3.7 (A$6bn) 22 hectare waterfront development in Sydney. It will include a controversial 160 metre hotel built on a pier in the harbour. McIver added: “It’s one of the biggest things Sydney’s seen in a long time.” Construction of Barangaroo is

expected to continue for 20 years, with the first buildings completing in 2015. The tender to create Barangaroo’s six hectare Headland Park was opened to Baulderstone, Hansen Yuncken, John

Holland, Laing O’Rourke Australia and Theiss in September. Thiess is the biggest construction

firm in Australia and it is involved in two liquid and natural gas projects. It has a £310m (A$500m) contract for site preparation and temporary facilities construction at the £31bn (A$50bn) Gorgon Project on Barrow Island, one of the world’s largest natural gas projects. It also has a $136m coal seam gas upstream infrastructure contract with Queensland Gas Corporation, which runs until March. Mark Vining says: “In mining we’re

working on both ends of the country on what are the biggest LNG projects going on in the country.” Thiess has a £3.1bn (A$5bn) contract to build underground tunnels linking

the airport to major arterial roads in Brisbane. The contract has one year to go. It also has a £1.8bn (A$3bn) contract to build a desalination plant in Victoria, again with about a year to go. Vining adds: “The economy here is

absolutely booming. Our unemployment rate is hovering around 5 per cent. There is an acute shortage of skilled labour in the country. So from a job stability point of view the future is certainly looking fairly rosy compared to Europe or the US. “The projects are big, technically

complex, the type that don’t come along very often in terms of someone’s CV - there aren’t many desalination plants being built in the Western Hemisphere at the moment. Gorgon is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the world.”
