How You Can Use PR to Help Your Business Grow

or many business owners PR has a bad reputation. It is often seen as too fluffy (think AbFab and air kisses), or all about Max Clifford and getting celebrities into the gossip pages. In fact, the reality is completely different – and that is good news for you and your business.
PR, or public relations, does “what it says on the tin” and is about engaging with your public to help you achieve your business goals. Done well it is very effective and can help almost any business, done badly … well see above.
So how can it help you?
That really depends on what you need, but some of the ways that PR can help include:
– Generating sales – Creating sales leads – Improving the sales environment – so when your sales team call, the prospect has heard of your business and is willing to take the call / meeting
– Helping you create a “community”, or “fans” for your product / service / brand – Opening up new geographies for you – Creating a market for new services – Making recruitment easier – Raising your value for a sale
And that’s just to name a few.
So perhaps the question should not be what can PR do, but how do you get started? For many people though the idea of PR is a little scary – especially if you run a small business. The idea of hiring an agency seems like an expensive step into the unknown, while trying to speak to journalists directly can frighten some of the most bullish CEOs.
Yet there are a few simple steps that anyone can follow to get started with PR, whether doing it in- house or hiring an agency or freelancer.
