Entrepreneur Country Magazine sits down with Andy Monshaw, IBM’s Global Head of Small and Midsized Business to discuss why he believes entrepreneurs are the engine of growth for a Smarter Planet.
If you look at the last 20 years, IBM’s business model has turned almost upside down. Its focus has shifted from that of a traditional PC business to one built around innovation and client value. Monshaw is candid about IBM’s change in direction and why it has served the company and its customers so well. “The PC business is a low margin, commoditising business and we exited that business because an invested dollar in R&D does not bring back as much client value as
it does in a higher margin business. The big learning’s as we went through this was the incredible amount of innovation that has happened over the last 100 years. The connection to changes in the world. Barcoding changed the world of retail.

systems and high volume secure transaction processing, changed the way that we travel and the way that we are able to create a whole travel ecosystem.”
“It is about constant innovation. You can never really stand still in an industry. If you make a market, you see that others come in very quickly. You’ll have first mover advantage but that first mover advantage goes away relatively quickly.
Things
begin to commoditise and you either stand still and commoditise or you innovate to the next thing and the next thing and the next thing.”
