OABA UPDATE………………….…………by Bob Johnson, OABA President and CEO
Thanks again to Lisa Hinton, Executive Secretary and to President Jeanne Keaton for giving me the opportunity to participate in the recent, very successful 60th Annual Con- vention with IAFE’s Zone II meeting. It was a an excellent opportunity to see old friends, make new ones and to con- tinue the ever important networking between carnivals and fairs.
I was very pleased to see a standing room only educational workshop the OABA and IAFE put together titled, “Protecting our Industry.” IAFE Chair Jim Sinclair did an excellent job fielding a panel of industry officials and I dare say, experts including IAFE President & CEO Jim Tucker, South Florida Fair President Rick Vymlatil, Strates Shows Jay Strates, Frank Parnell, NICA and myself.
While we all had only six minutes to make some brief com- ments regarding the challenges the carnivals, fairs and in- dependent concessionaires are facing with regards to labor issues, midway operations and efficiency, state funding
challenges, cost of state regulations, food costs, etc., all did an excellent job!
We all know that there are challenges to every industry, but ours is one that not only faces state political challenges and funding, given our current the economic state, but one that we want to protect for the next generation of fair goers and business owners.
The bottom line is that we are all in this business of making fun, educating our patrons and creating one of the best family experiences for hundreds of millions of people across this great land. Let’s all put our best thinking caps on and think about how we can make this industry a better place for all to work, have fun and create lasting memories.
As Memorial Day has been observed and with July 4th right around the corner…please travel safely and enjoy your summer!
