BREVARD COUNTY FAIR By Bill Cannon

The 2011 Brevard County Fair is now in the record books

and we continue to grow. Attendance increased for the third straight year allowing us to continue to finish in the black. We also made adjustments to our gate prices with a POP every day. The pay one price concept is working well for us and it is certainly the best buy in family entertainment in our service area. We had some weather challenges just prior to opening

resulting in the collapse of our animal tent. Luckily, no one was injured and the 4-H animals weathered the storm as well. It did turn out to be a challenge for American Tent but they sent a crew back down from Maryland and they had the tent back up and repaired in record time for opening. The damaging winds were so strong that tie down straps snapped and three foot anchors were ripped from the ground. Mother Nature did visit again with much needed rain forcing us to having a soft opening. A big thank you to Joe and Jennifer Walter and all the 4-H members and par- ents for their help and hard work in resetting the animal tent. Without their hard work and dedication, our farm ani- mal participation, demonstrations and competitions would have been sparse. We had another banner 4-H Archery Competition this

year. 4-H competitors and their parents converged on the archery range at Wickham Park for this great learning com- petition. It was an outstanding event for all. Wickham Park and Wickham Park Pavilion is operated by one of our part- ners, Brevard County Parks and Recreation Department. The Brevard Extension also put together a Scavenger Hunt that took place on the fairgrounds. This fun and educational activity had photo/information stops throughout the fair- grounds and was fun for all who participated. The Scaven- ger Hunt was just one of the interactive activities designed just for the Fair this year. Our Ranch Rodeo continues to grow and is always a

source of excitement for our patrons. The 4-H Horse Expo was well attended as well as the Dog Agility Demonstra- tion. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Department gave two K- 9 demonstrations that thrilled it’s audiences. We are also pleased to announce the addition of Kitchen Craft to our family of commercial exhibitors. They do excellent cooking demonstrations and have quality products to vend. Another addition to this year’s Fair was a pony ride concession. They were local and they had some of their farm animals on display as well. We had our first Poultry Auction this year and it was a great success. Mr. Lowell Loadholtz, for- mer Brevard County Extension Director, was our auction- eer. It turned out profitable for our 4-H participants and the whole process was very entertaining to our Fair audi- ence. We were also pleased by a visit from Mr. Toby Turner and one of his directors from the Fire Fighters Fair in Vero Beach. Toby was instrumental in helping us get started by making available many of their forms and SOP’s that have made their Fair operate so smoothly. Just an- other example the caring people who make up our Florida

Federation of Fairs. Now that we have finished our first three year cycle, we

are evaluating what has worked well and what has not gone so well for us. We are constantly striving to make our Brevard County Fair the best it can be for our residents and our vendors. We owe a great deal to Mr. Jim Fletcher and the Brevard County Extension Service employees for all the time and effort they put into making 2011 another suc- cessful year. A big thank you to our midway provider Mrs. Gloria Myers, her staff and family with Myers International Midways. They have been instrumental in helping us with all aspects of the Fair business and we look forward to a long lasting relationship with Myers International Midway. We also owe a debt of gratitude to Lisa Hinton, the mem-

bership of the Florida Federation of Fairs and the I.A.F.E. for being there for us when we have questions or situations to address. Last but not least, the Brevard County Fair would not be

possible without the dedication of all of our volunteers. We are a dedicated group of individuals who strive to bring good clean wholesome fun and entertainment to the fami- lies and visitors of our Brevard County Fair. Without the unselfish donation of their time and talents, there would be no Brevard County Fair. We look forward to your continued support. On behalf of Mr. Frank Sullivan and all the Brevard

County Fair Board members, we wish everyone all the best for a great 2011 Fair Season.

Dennis Orme & Larry Orme of Carousel Foods

(famous for their Doughnut Burger) with David Viers- CFE, Executive Director of the Volusia County Fair visit at the Florida State Fair.

The 3rd generation of Orme's, Jeremy, was busy with

deep frying candy bars in his own booth and missed the photo opp.

Since this photo was taken, we are sad to report that Larry passed away on March 11th.
