During the course of a year, the Township contributes to approximately 40 deserving local agencies that provide an array of services to Township residents of all ages. They also support numerous cultural activities as well as supporting a child care scholarship program of their own.
The Township is guided by a Board of Trustees presided over by a Supervisor who works with the Trustees to conduct the business of running Township Government.
The Township Clerk’s office registers voters, issues temporary handicap parking placards, supplies information on elected officials/ elections and acts as a passport acceptance agency.
The Assessor is the property taxpayer’s advocate in matters of property taxation. This office provides invaluable assistance to the public regarding assessment appeals, senior and home-owner exemptions, how the property tax is formulated and variance information. Last year this office served well over 4,000 tax payers.
The Food Pantry is now serving over 3,000 individuals per month. In addition to the food purchased by the Township, the generous support of the local community, including churches, synagogues, schools, fire departments and many businesses help feed the needy in the community. This last year the Niles Township Food Pantry Foundation was formed to better assist in raising much needed donations to stock the pantry shelves. The Food Pantry also endeavors to make the holidays a little happier by supplying turkeys and the trimmings to those who, otherwise, would not have food to put on the table. Their phone number is 847-983-0073.
The General Assistance Program is staffed by two social workers who manage a locally administered welfare program that provides financial assistance to persons who are not eligible for any other state or federal assistance program. The program assists with rent, utilities, pharmaceutical and medical needs. They also provide referrals and counseling to aid recipients and register township residents who do not have health insurance for the Access to Care Program.
Niles Township also provides legal assistance, free of charge, to seniors for consultations and referrals.
The Township offer computer classes to provide instruction at a reasonable cost to township residents who are job hunting or interested in expanding their personal knowledge in a variety of courses. Some of the courses offered are Intro to Computing, Internet Basics, and Digital Photo Editing.
