Marilee and Dana at Omega last month

Last month Dana and I attended the Natural Awak- enings publishers’ conference at the Omega Insti- tute, along with our sister and brother publishers from across the country. There are now 87 Natural Awakenings magazines publishing and you are one of the 3.5 million Natural Awakenings readers. We came together in Rhinebeck to share stories, learn about new projects, and participate in meaningful ceremonies. They included a beautiful Despacho Ceremony performed for our Natural Awakenings Family by Don Francisco Chura Flores, a Peruvian Shaman. We are filled with love and renewed pur- pose for our work here in Westchester and Putnam. A good retreat will do that!

When we emerged from our conference cocoon, I heard the term “Occupy Wall Street” for the first time. The flow of ideas and major world events is happening at a dizzying speed. It can feel

overwhelming at times, so it’s crucial to carve out time to step back, reassess, and see what’s truly important to us. Afterwards we feel renewed, enthusiastic and bal- anced, and everything flows easier in our lives. Time spent at a retreat in nature with kindred spirits is a prescription to heal whatever ails you. I highly recommend it. Coincidentally, our editorial theme this month is Local and Personal Econ-

omy, and it’s our first issue with this focus. Always a supporter of local food and local businesses, I realized about a year ago that I should also bank locally. Money in local banks and credit unions provides the loans that fuel local businesses. I found a “rated A” community bank and moved my accounts there. It feels good to be banking locally. Did you know that the GDP assesses economic growth only? This measure-

ment counts wars, sickness, and businesses that pollute in the positive column. Thankfully, we now have economic visionaries with new ideas such as adapting the Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI), which more accurately measures economic progress and well-being. In Bhuten, there is a Gross National Happiness index that researchers have been studying for years. This year the United Nations General Assembly urged countries to measure health and happiness as well as wealth. Take heart in our evolving consciousness around money and read our feature article, “Economics of Happiness: The New Economy” on page 36. In celebration of our four-year publishing anniversary, Dana and I are setting some exciting intentions for 2012. We aim to complete phase one of our Provider Network in the Natural Awakenings Network (NAN) program and launch our corporate wellness program in early 2012, along with a new website. We’ve also been chosen to be a test market for the new national Natural Awakenings web store, NAwebstore.com. I can’t wait to start shopping. We’re once again em- barking on our Annual Natural Living Directory for January. It’s our third year of publishing this go-to-guide packed with helpful information and our popular prac- titioner profiles. In December we’ll focus on Uplifting Humanity, with an article by Wayne Dyer. Enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday in a way that is meaningful to you. I’m very

grateful to be spending the time with my parents this year. Make time for what’s important!
