This sounds like a beautiful and very inspiring place. Please tell us about the upcoming event to benefit the Garden and Susan G. Komen – how did that partnership begin?
Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart, body and
soul. Throughout her diagnosis, treatments and endless days in the hospital, she spent her time thinking of ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about her own situation. Moved by Susan’s compassion for others and commitment to making a difference, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer. Though Susan lost her battle with the disease, her legacy lives on
through the work of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the organization Nancy started in her honor. Komen for the Cure is the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested more than $1 billion since its inception in 1982. Komen’s promise is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all, and energizing science to find the cures. The local affiliate here in Southwest Florida continues to raise
funds to find a cure. The visions of both organizations have a natural fit; both aim to find a cure and to ensure quality care for all touched by this horrific disease.

The event coming up is the Stiletto Sprint? Sounds like a blast!
The Stiletto Sprint is a high heel sprint that is taking place on Friday, October 21, 2011, on Fifth Avenue South in downtown Naples. It is a blast, and such a fun night to rally your friends, coworkers and family to help raise funds for these two organizations. It is $25 to register online at
www.komenswfl.org and just by registering you can be entered into a drawing to win a four carat pink sapphire.
Tory’s Hair Salon is doing something fun this year to rally area salon owners, employees and clientele. How can area salons get involved?
As we enter the month of October we will see pink more and more, even in the NFL. Breast cancer can affect men as well as women. I would like to take the time to give back to the community and share a bit about breast cancer and a major upcoming event. I have asked for some help from my friend Amy Lane who is Executive Director of the Garden of Hope and Courage:
What is the Garden of Hope and Courage and what is its purpose?
The Garden of Hope and Courage is a beautiful 2.5 acre healing garden located on the downtown campus of Naples Community Hospital. It is an outdoor space that combines the natural environment with therapeutic elements such as water, plants, walking pathways and sculpture, and is to be used by hospital employees, patients and visitors.
How did this Garden come to be?
The Garden is inspired by a woman who passed away from breast cancer in 1994. Her name was Jan Emfield, and during her own treatments she grew tired of the sterile hospital environment. She had always hoped that there would be a place to escape outside, breathe in the fresh air, or just simply to feel the sunlight on her skin. From the time her treatments began, she started jotting down notes of what she envisioned a healing garden would look like. Jan had a green thumb and knew just how powerful and healing an outdoor garden could be for all patients, employees and visitors. A dear friend and area restaurateur, Richard D’Amico, promised that he would see her vision through. After several years of fundraising, he and a local board of directors took Jan’s notes and helped her dream come to fruition.

Tory’s is amazing! This year the crew at Tory’s has started a team called SHEAR SPRINTERS. All area salons, employees and clientele are invited to join this team to help raise funds for these two organizations. You can join SHEAR SPRINTERS by joining the team online at
www.komenswfl.org or by calling Tory’s at 239-262-2217 for more information, just ask for Paul. We’re happy to send out brochures and provide additional info to any interested salon. Can you imagine watching SHEAR SPRINTERS lined up on Fifth Avenue South, ready to sprint? It’s going to be an amazing night and with such great partners like Tory’s we sure to have a fantastic event.
Amy, this is a disease that touches everyone, and we at Tory’s would like to do more. For the month of October we will donate 5% of all salon services to help the fight. I know that if we all work together we can win this battle over breast cancer. Thank you and Richard D’Amico for your dedication to the community and to this cause. Please know that I, the staff at Tory’s, and Pulse Magazine SWFL are always here to support you and Susan G. Komen for the Cure®!
