Believe it or not, there’s still one more stop before calling it a night, and it’s something only allowed in the wee hours of the early morning. At 1127 Truman Avenue, there is a Citgo gas station (that’s right, I said gas station) and inside there’s a hidden treasure called Dion’s which serves the all-time-best fried chicken in the entire world. I know it sounds a little insane, but I would be doing readers a huge disservice by not mentioning Dion’s. If I could count the times that I’ve woken up in the morning with a bag of Dion’s fried chicken in my bed, well, I would actually never admit to that because it’s kind of gross, but you get my drift. It’s also one of the best hangover cures on the planet. Cold and straight out of the fridge, it will truly change your life.
A mixture of both tourist and local life is the best combination to maximize your Key West experience. Truth be told, I spent several hours last night at one of the biggest tourist traps on the island, listening to the house band play every 80’s hair band cover ever written while the corresponding video played in the background. And it was truly awesome! In my book, there’s nothing better than watching a David Lee Roth scissor kick while knocking back a scotch and soda, but you need a balance to fully appreciate all the island has to offer.
