Health information technology is a growing field that employs health information technicians, software engineers and IT specialists for the purpose of organizing and communicating vital medical information with hospitals, doctors offices, nursing care facilities, outpatient care centers, pharmacies, and home healthcare services. Paper records sys- tems have given way to electronic medical records and with this ad- vancement comes the need for people specializing in new computer software, security concerns and data analysis. Electronic health records contain information on patients’ medical history, symptoms, diagnos- tic tests, test results, and treatment methods in an electronic medium that is faster, more secure and easier to access and share. Providers of health IT include major international corporations that offer multiple services and products in various fields as well as smaller business that specialize in healthcare and information technology.
1. McKesson Technology Solutions Founded in 1974, McKes- son Technol- ogy Solutions employes
32,000 people throughout it’s 40,000 U.S. healthcare locations and around the world. More than 70 percent of U.S. hospitals have software and hardware IT from McKesson installed. McKesson is also the largest pharmaceutical distributor in North America. McKesson’s headquarters are in San Francisco. The company is dedicated to making healthcare safer and less expensive. McKesson ranks as the largest vendor of health IT for 2011 in terms of revenue, according to “Healthcare Informatics” magazine.

ganizations, financial services firms, manu- facturers, educational institutions, Internet service and telecommunications providers, airlines and transportation companies, and public-sector agencies. EMC Corporation has 48,500 employees worldwide, includ- ing more than 21,000 U.S. employees, and corporate headquarters in Hopkinton, Mass. Philips Health- care is the second highest grossing division of Royal Philips Electronics, accounting for nearly 33 percent of overall sales. Philips Healthcare provides cardiac care, home healthcare and acute care. Philips also offers energy efficient lighting solutions, lifestyle products for personal well-being, portable
entertainment and oral healthcare. Philips Healthcare’s goal is to improve patient outcomes while decreasing the burden of the healthcare systems.

Michael Dell founded Dell Inc. in 1984 and the com- pany has since grown into one of the largest technol- ogy companies in the world. Dell debuted on the Fortune
