The deadline is fast approaching for entries to this year’s London and South East Director of the Year awards, run by the Institute of Directors (IoD) and sponsored by PwC and HSBC. They are organised to recognise the hard work, inspiration and management skills of business leaders across the region

Entries are flooding in from directors, chief executives and decision makers of small, medium and global enterprises, whether they are members of the IoD or not. The finalists will be chosen from across the whole of the south east of England and the capital to attend the Awards Gala Dinner at the Landmark Hotel in London on March 29, 2012.

Rodger Broad, director for the IoD in the south east, said: ”Taking part in the awards is a personal and professional opportunity for all those who enter to take a considered view of their company and their individual role in its success.

”Indeed, many previous entrants have said making the entry itself helped them to refocus their views on how they operated.

”The judges also welcome nominations from directors who aren’t necessarily members of the IoD already. They will be looking at various criteria, which include the candidate’s personal influence on their business, their corporate social responsibility and how they interact with their staff and customers.

”There are great leaders out there, many of them unsung outside their own organisations. The IoD awards are a chance to recognise and celebrate their achievements.”

Poole-based solar system among largest in UK

Renewable energy expertise in the south was in the spotlight with the official opening of one of the largest solar power stations in the country.

Slepe Farm, near Poole, is the largest of its kind in Dorset, and unlike similar projects, which have been managed by teams from outside the UK, Slepe Farm has been masterminded entirely by specialist local firms.

Located on Dorchester Road, the substantial 498.4kWp ground- mounted solar PV system is made of 1,780 Dimplex polycrystalline photovoltaic modules solar panels and can generate over 505,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year, the equivalent to the electricity consumed by around 200 average UK households.

Mark Simon, owner of Farm Power, commissioned the project, which was designed and managed by national energy solutions company Anesco. Stuart MacKenzie, managing director of

Dimplex, who was himself brought up in an area close to Slepe Farm, joined Adrian Pike from Anesco and other business leaders, local dignitaries, and community representatives, for the official opening, conducted by the lord- lieutenant of Dorset, Mrs Anthony Pitt-Rivers.

Pike, CEO of Anesco, commented: ”Unlike other solar power stations, Slepe Farm has been commissioned, designed, supplied and built entirely by UK teams from across the south. It shows how the southern counties are driving ahead as leaders in the green energy sector, something also having a knock-on effect for local communities, through the creation of jobs.”

The renewable energy sector continues to thrive in the southern counties. Anesco has recruited more than 80 people in the past six months, with a further 150 expected to be recruited this year.
