Innovation – it’s all about making waves Leading Edge
’How important is it to use enterprising and innovative solutions to drive your company forward in the recovery?’ asks David Murray, publisher of The Business Magazine. The answer, of course, is that it is vital
A survey out last month showed the impact of the economic downturn on R&D spending in the UK. It painted a discouraging picture with only a fifth of companies spending more than 5% of their revenues on R&D, despite most companies recognising that innovation was critical to maintaining or growing market share.
The worrying statistic was that nearly a third of UK companies spent absolutely nothing on searching for new ideas.
Our important new series, Leading Edge, in association with advisers BDO, spotlights those companies that do understand that creative ideas and processes can dramatically improve business.
In this feature series, we are looking at businesses in the Solent and Thames Valley regions that are truly Leading Edge – either in their products and services, or in their policies and practices.
For instance, Blue Chip Data Systems, based in Poole, has adopted a traditional customer- focused culture to mark out its path in the dynamic world of technology.
Another world-class regional company, Allmakes 4x4, featured last month, has become a global leader in its field by concentrating on product quality, premium values and a customer focus.
And Kondor, also featured last month, has used a purpose-built order management
service to help put the Dorset company at the forefront of its sector.
BDO and The Business Magazine will each month spotlight businesses that are leading the way as the south recovers from a damaging recession.

As was stated in these pages last month, to be leading edge you don’t stand still, but continually seek to improve.
It’s not only
about catching the wave, it’s about creating it.....
