news 7 New dean for business school
The University of Portsmouth Business School has appointed professor Gioia Pescetto as its new dean.
Formerly dean of the faculty of business and management at Canterbury Christ Church University, she takes over from Ann Ridley, who has retired after a decade in the post. Educated in Italy, the USA and the UK, Pescetto worked as an economist at San Paolo Bank in London before moving into academia. She has taught extensively at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in several areas of economics and finance, including microeconomics, financial economics, corporate finance, treasury management and research methods.
With finance such a strong sector in the Solent region, she said: ”It’s in my background and I want to build closer links with financial institutions and the sector. We need to be more outward facing in the new higher education environment and continue to develop Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) and other links with the local economy. We need to open up possibilities for more companies to become involved with higher education, especially now that the financial structure of higher education is changing from 2012.”
KTPs are partnerships with local businesses, which embed a graduate within a company and
progress the university’s strong record of business education and research. By extending our collaboration with business and academic partners, and with the wider community, I believe we are best placed to turn challenges into opportunities.
”I am committed to developing graduates who can operate in the increasingly complex world of business, where boundaries across organisational functions and geographical and cultural settings, have become fluid and dynamic.
Professor Gioia Pescetto
transfer knowledge and expertise into a project designed to drive the business to higher levels of income and profitability.
Joining Portsmouth Business School at a time of ambitious change in higher education and challenges to the global economy, she continued: ”I look forward to continuing to
”Portsmouth is an excellent university for placements and we currently have well over 200 Business School students placed in industry. A work placement does things for students that we cannot do; they learn additional skills and it matures them. It is paramount that we offer our students these opportunities.
”The competition for students, academic talent and research funding is intense and the need to remain innovative has never been greater. My priority for Portsmouth Business School will be to foster knowledge within the University and across the academic and business worlds to promote the development of business education and rigorous business research that significantly improves practice.”
