Audubon Organic Farm Tour
The Potomac Valley Audu-
bon Society will sponsor a tour of the Redbud Organic Farm near Gerrardstown the after- noon of Sunday, August 14. The tour will be free and
anyone with an interest is wel- come to attend. Those who wish to participate should plan to meet the Society’s Executive Director, Kristin Alexander, at 12:45 p.m. at the Food Lion Parking lot on Route 51 in In- wood. The tour group will car- avan and carpool from there to the farm. The farm tour will last from 1:00 p.m. to about 2:30 p.m. The Redbud Farm is a family
business named after historic Redbud Hollow, the original log cabin on the premises. Its
goal is to produce high quality organic food while promoting sustainable agriculture, build- ing, and energy applications through an internship pro- gram and on-farm research. Its fresh produce and flow-
ers are sold in restaurants, Washington D.C. area farmers markets, and through a Com- munity Supported Agriculture (CSA) program that services local consumers in the Eastern Panhandle. Visitors will learn about the
challenges and successes of growing organically and the latest organic farming tech- niques. They will also see first- hand the impact that stink bugs are having on local crops. The farm’s energy-saving
initiatives include greenhous- es heated by solar hot water and one of the largest photo- voltaic solar electrical systems in West Virginia. The system
supplies about half the property’s current electri- cal needs. The farm is owned and
operated by Haroun Hal- lack and Clarissa Mathews. Hallack served as an exten- sion agent in Sierra Leone, West Africa, and has ex- tensive training in sustain- able agricultural technolo- gies and green building. Mathews, who has a Ph.D. in Entomology, is a former US Department of Agricul- ture researcher who now teaches at Shepherd Uni- versity’s Institute for En- vironmental Studies. For more information
about the tour, contact Ms. Alexander at pvasmail@
