AUGUST 2011 Independent Schools Have Openings Several of independent

schools in and near Jefferson County report openings for September. Here is a brief sur- vey of them. Morgan Academy, Jefferson

County A one-room schoolhouse setting for children ages 5–14. Morgan Academy offers

a contemporary take on the “one-room” learning environ- ment. It’s an arts- and envi- ronment-infused that blends academic rigor with hands-on experiential learning. It’s a school where gardening is a subject right along with the- ater, music, civics and science. Curriculum-based field trips over the past few years include visits to the White House, the Library of Congress, the Smith- sonian, Colonial Williamsburg, Gettysburg, the Maryland Sci- ence Center, and overnight trips to New York City and Phil- adelphia. Gym classes take the form of outdoor sports, and a running club meets the playing fields of Morgan’s Grove. Morgan limits enrollment to

30 students, using a teaching model that allows each student some one-on-one instruction, with the majority of class time spent in small groups of five. For group projects there may be up to 15 in a class. See www.morganacademy-

miles west of Charles Town Pre-school through Grade 8. The school is situated on 30

acres of farmland in a rural part of the county, and was es- tablished nearly 30 years ago with the aim of providing a well-rounded education that is academically-challenging. Of the schools in this survey, Country Day fits the recogniz- able model of “school,” with delineated grades and subjects. But beyond the academic cur- riculum, the school espouses an Enlightenment Era emphasis on personal development. Country Day’s motto is positively Jeffer- sonian: Reason, Respect, and Responsibility. Foreign language and com-

puter instruction begin in kin- dergarten and extend through eighth grade. Classics studies and phys ed are core subjects approach with the equal vigor and expectation. Country Day is a nonprofit corporation, with primary sup- port coming from tuition, char-

itable donations, fundraising, and grant awards. www. www.thecountryday- school.com

grade. The school’s arts-based ap-

proach in which the arts are seen as an integral part of the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive life of each student. The arts-based curriculum is designed to stimulate problem solving-skills across all subjects. In addition to conveying the in- trinsic value of the arts, drama, creative movement, dance, music, and visual arts are inte-

grated across the curriculum. This multisensory approach celebrates individual learning differences, nurturing all of the intelligences: Linguistic, logical- mathematical, musical, spatial, bodily kinesthetic, inter-and in- tra-personal, and nature based. Lucy School is set on an his-

toric 17-acre property, with pond, waterfall, wetlands, or- ganic garden, and wooded ar- eas with nature trails. Children hike daily on the property, ob- serving the surrounding plants and animals. The school is housed in a renovated barn and new “green” classroom build- ing, with many activities taking place outdoors in. Lucy School received the LEED for Schools Platinum Building award in spring of 2011.
