AUGUST 2011 What’s On Spotlight

For several years now, the Blues

Gate Musician’s CO-OP has been con- necting fans, players and venues to- gether. Founder Dennis Wright cre- ated the Blues Gate project out of a love of live music. While taking les- sons from the infamous “Chef Eric,” Wright came to understand that there existed a dearth of playing opportunities for local musicians. Nearing retirement and with a good business mind, Dennis decided to tackle the problem. The Chef would tell Wright that in other areas you could just strap on your guitar and hit three or four jams in a night. A light bulb went off in Wright’s head, and with some encouragement from his late wife Kathy, he set out to create a musical network where those who played music could have ample opportunities to perform and entertain, maybe make a little cash, meet other musicians, and gain exposure. In return, the host venues would also profit from the increased regular business - hence the birth of Blues Gate Productions. The music at a Blues Gate show is motly blues. “Our musicians play all types of ‘Boomer Friendly’

music, including blues, rock and roll, oldies, country, jazz and more,” says Wright. “The shows fea- ture mostly “dance-able” tunes, so wear comfortable shoes,” says Wright. Currently Blues Gate has the following regular jams:,

Thursdays - Electric Jam at The TapHouse in Charles Town Fridays- Acoustic Jam at the Taphouse in Charles Town Saturdays- Unplugged Saturdays at the Dirty Dog in Martinsburg Sundays - Acoustic Jam at the DubV in Martinsburg

Sweet Caroline’s Jam in Winchester, Va. the first Wednesday of Every Month Coming Soon to the Brass Ring in Kearneysville, one Saturday a month allstar jam

In addition to these regular events, Blues Gate is always exploring new venues, providing enter- tainment for festivals, private parties, and also booking acts. The best way to stay informed of every- thing Blues Gate is to log on to the Blues Gate FaceBook page and join the other 2000 something fans or check out the Blues Gate website www.BluesGate.com. “I am always amazed at the level of talent in this area,” says Wright. “I get a kick out of the guy

who lives down the street and plays a mean guitar or the shy housewife who brings in her bass and sings like an angel. Over the last few years, it has been humbling seeing the growth of many musi- cians, seeing others get together and form their own projects. We have even brought a few couples together as well. It is a great social scene wrapped around great music. More jammers are always welcome,” says Wright.
