pretty NEAT (literally). Non-exercise activity thermogenesis, NEAT for short, is based on the notion that Americans simply aren’t getting enough non-exercise activity during the day. Across the country, advancing technology is taking physical labor off the streets and putting jobs into the

are doingmuch of the work we humans used to do, and our health is suffering as a result. Additionally, recent studies have shown that even for us office warriors, simply hitting the gymfor 30minutes a daymay not be cutting it.What do we do in this ever-advancing culture? Although getting high-intensity physical activity in the gym has many benefits, including cardiovascular health, weight loss
and strength gains, Levine reminds us that not only is high-intensity physical activity beneficial, but bouts of low-intensity physical activity can be just as good.
Here are some tips on howto put the NEAT theory into practice:
•Instead ofwatching TV, take your dog for awalk. Not only is it good for you,
he’ll love you for it!
•If you’re taking a bathroombreak at work, go to the farthest bathroomin
the building, even if itmeans taking the stairs.
•Have walking meetings, or spend 15 minutes catching up with a
co-worker while walking around the block after work.
•Park farther away frombuildingswhen going to the office or grocery store.
•Buy a pedometer so you can record your steps andwitness the
difference between days.
Integrating physical activity into your schedule throughout the day helps to eliminate couch potato time, and it results in extra calories burned. Don’t think you’re getting off that easily,
though!High-intensity cardio and strength training can’t be replaced, somake sure to get yourself to the
gym.Use the Anytime Health ActivityTracker to track your activi- ties (evenNEAT activities like house-clean- ing) and create personalizedworkouts that automatically upload to your profilewith the scan of your keyfob.
