LATIN BILLBOARD AWARDS PROJECT

Company: LaserNet Location: Coral Gables, Florida

One week before the huge live Telemundo broadcast of the Latin Billboard Awards show, LaserNet was contacted to add lasers to the performance of Enrique Iglesias. Since Enrique was rumoured to be winning several awards, Enrique’s LD wanted ‘lots of lasers’. LaserNet reviewed the inventory and agreed on nine lasers to be on stage with Enrique. Being live television, the challenge of getting so many lasers on stage, operational, and off stage was considerable. “The first rehearsal was scheduled in two days and meant our time on stage was limited due to the rehearsal schedule of the other performers,” said LaserNet President Tom Harman. “Since there was no time for advance programming, it was decided that the laser crew would stay after the rehearsal to work out the details.” Three high powered YAGs and six RGB lasers were selected to surround the artist with laser beams. “Establishing the laser positions was difficult because the stage was only 30ft by 40ft. The artist’s full band took up more than half of the set and in the United States; we have to be concerned with where the lasers point. Due to the close proximity of the audience, we had two choices; up into the ceiling or down onto the stage floor,” revealed Tom. “Shooting into the ceiling, we had to protect the followspot operators, so the angle was high. Shooting down onto the stage required the laser projectors to be elevated. Luckily, the set had three 4ft by 12ft tall mirror flats that rolled on / off for Enrique’s segment. We brought in three sections of 12-inch by 12-inch by 12ft truss with a floor base plate on each end. We bolted the base plate to the rear side

of the mirror flat and placed a laser on top of the truss. The lasers fit perfectly over the flats, like it had been originally designed that way. We then added a wedge under each laser to get proper downward angle and then secured the lasers with bungee cords,” continued Tom. At this point, there were five lasers distributed throughout the band on the stage and three lasers 12ft in the air. That still left one 15W RGB laser with nowhere to go. “Since the lighting rigs were already loaded and locked into position, we couldn’t use any of the numerous hanging pipes,” added Tom. “ Looking up into the raft- ers, we located a catwalk that has a line of sight to the stage. By clamping a 6ft black pipe across the top of the catwalk hand rails, we were able to hang the RGB projector, shoot through the lower rails and hit the stage unobstructed. Not bad for a last minute plan.” All the lasers needed power, DMX, and signal cabling run to a computer base under the stage. After the cables were labeled, the runs were placed so as not to interfere with any of the other acts. To get a clear view of the show, the laser operator was placed near the FOH position in the middle of the bleachers. “We were now able to think about the show. Working with the LD we created several ‘laser looks’ that we would call up live during the performance. All went well and it looked like a laser storm on stage with the performer,” concluded Tom. www.lasernet.com
