Ask a stupid question… The phone at the local hospital rang, and the duty nurse picked it up to hear a man speaking frantically at the other end.
“ My wife’s preg-
nant and her contractions are only two minutes apart..” The nurse asked him, “Is this her first child ?” “No, you idiot!” The man shouted. “This is her husband!”

Mrs Dawn Taylor and Miss
Jenny Ellis both work for Myerscough Vets in Great Harwood.
Dawn is on receptionist and Jenny is a Vet. They both love cats. This month they are both doing a charity bungee jump for Cats Protection. There commitment probably seemed like a good idea at the time, but now... THEY ARE VERY SCARED!! Because, on 10th September they will jump off a 160ft crane with a piece of string attached to their ankles. They must really love cats. Cats Protection is the UK's largest cat welfare charity, helping more than 215,000 cats & kittens every year through it's network of over 250 volunteer-run branches and 29 adoption centres. The charity promotes the benefits of neutering and produces a wide range of cat care information for owners. You don’t have to go to the same lengths as Dawn & Jenny but you can help with a little contribution. You can contact Dawn via email on:

On a day interrupted by thunder and lightning, Ian Olerenshaw lifted his second Captain’s Day title at the start of August with a stunning round of 64. 1997 Captain’s Day winner Olerenshaw, a 14 handicapper, finished the day at nine-under-par, well clear of Ian Garraway (72/4/68) and Simon Shields (80/11/69). The evening entertainment was provided by the fabulous Just John & Paul, and club captain Arthur Drain thanked everyone involved in the day for making it such a special occasion. The club honoured the memory of past Captain Ian Holt in early August, with the first playing of a competition in his memory. The Ian Holt Golden Eagle Putter, an event which will be played annually from now on, was the idea of the club’s Competitions Chairman Andy Dean and Mr Holt’s widow Jeanette. Mick McKeon took the honour of being the first ever winner of the competition, and his will be the first name to be engraved on a vintage golden putter on display in the clubhouse. McKeon shot a round of 86-19-67 to seal a one shot victory over Gary Aspin (84/16/68) and Chris Murray (81/13/68). The all-Rishton pair of Andy Broad and Mark Turner won the big Open competition of the month, amassing a huge 48 points during the Summer Open Fourball to win by five from Harry Ingram and Patrick Macadam, who pipped Ian Garraway and Peter Clark to second place on a card play-off. Ian Young claimed his first board prize in the Trappes Lomax Cup in late July after a round of 84/17/67. That was one better than
second-placed Peter Jackson 2.
(75/7/68) with the club’s Greens Chairman Tony Jones claiming third with a score of 89/20/69. On the Ladies side, the July medal was won by Daphne Dawson, who dropped just three shots in a round of 69. Sandra Baron claimed second with a nett 72. Linda Symons won the EWGA stableford with 35 points, two better than Kath Lord in second. Maureen Golden won the Eve Skelton Trophy with a nett 73, before going on to claim Lady Captain’s Day with the same score the following weekend. Mal Bernasconi was runner-up on Lady Captain’s Day with a score of 74. Angela Smith claimed the Summer Trophy after beating Jean Dodgson on a card play-off after the pair ended the day tied at one under par.

07809 201460 Proposal to close Great Harwood Household Waste
Recycling Centre. Register your protest now. Lancashire County Council is considering closing the waste recycling centre on Heys Lane, and Councillors and local residents are not amused. The site in Great Harwood is an important and well used facility and if it was to close it would mean a most inconvenient journey along Whalley Road, one of Hyndburn’s busiest roads to the alternative site at Whinney Hill. There would also be a risk of increased, local Fly-Tipping. If you would like to register your thoughts on the matter you can do so on :
www.lancashire.gov.uk/waste and follow the Household Waste Recycling Centres links. Or you can write to County Councillor A Atkinson. Lancashire County Council, PO Box 78, County Hall, Fishergate, Preston, PR1 8XJ.
