RV CLUB NEWS:
British Columbia Good Sam’s Samboree 2011
BY JANET SCHLENKER It was a hot sunny day June 22nd as the earlybird RV rigs
started to roll into Heritage Park, Chilliwack. People wondered around the park to find their friends and catch up on what’s been happening since the last Good Sam meeting. Happy Hour was held beside the rigs to soak up the last few rays of sunshine for the day. Each morning we fortified ourselves with coffee and cookies
to prepare for the new day. Early Tursday morning the golfers headed off for their
Golf Tournament while the String Golf game was set up inside the building because of the risk of rain. Te String Golf game proved to be fun and challenging because the balls bounced all over the place when they hit the concrete floor. In the aſternoon, we returned to the building for the Bean Bag Baseball Tournament. Te teams, consisting of members from different Chapters, made lots of noise cheering on their fellow players. Aſter dinner it was time to dress up in our Chapter vests and gather for the Opening Ceremonies. It was a special time watching all the Flag Bearers being lead in by the Piper. Several State Directors or their Representatives and special guests came to help open the Samboree, that is those from New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Southern California, Utah, Oregon, Washington, the Mayor of Chilliwack and the Manager of Heritage Park. Te total Samboree attendance was 107 Rigs and 11 Walk-ins, with 19 First Timers. Following the Opening Ceremonies, the Chapters: Ogopogo Sams and Juniper Sams, presented skits. A few keeners stayed for the Square Dancing aſter the skits while otheres visited the Chapter display tables. Friday morning we gathered for the BC Provincial President’s
meeting to learn what has been happening and plans for the future. Te next BC Samboree will be held in Midway, BC in June 2012. Te aſternoon was jammed packed with a variety of activities
making it hard to choose what to attend. Inside there was the Cribbage Tournament and the Ladies Tea Social, while others headed outside for the Bocce Tournament. Tere was lots of hooting and hollering as players tried to shout directions to the balls as they rolled across the grass, hopefully heading towards the little white ball to score points. Nearby a crowd gathered to watch the Tractor Rodeo. Te driver had to guide the gas golf cart as fast as possible over

obstacles and around pillons while the passenger tried not to drop the egg (the golf ball) held in a spoon at arms length outside the cart. Boy, it was challenging and fun to watch. One pair should have won a prize for the funniest ride. Te driver hit all the pillons while passenger dropped the egg repeatedly requiring the poor driver to run around the cart searching to retrieve the egg; they got stuck on top of the last pillon, thus not finishing their run. Te rest of us could not stop laughing. We finished off the aſternoon with a Pet Parade, where dogs
and owners came dressed up. In the evening we returned for the “Back to the 50’s Teme Parade” where several people dressed up in outfits from the past. Te winning couple was Chaplain Erv and his wife Deb. He was dressed in a white Tux suit while she wore a beautiful green dress. She was amazing because it was her original Graduation Prom Dress. Te 32nd
Avenue Band started up the music
playing some of the golden oldies from the 50’s. Tey kicked off the dance with the Hula Hoop contest to see how long anyone could keep it spining, it hit the floor pretty quickly, guess we’re all out of practice. Te dancers joined in keeping up with the music, some discarding their shoes to change to a good old sock hop. It was nice watching as many dancers twilled around the floor in their 50’s dresses and outfits. Saturday morning started early with the Flea Market plus
the Arts and Craſts viewing and judging. Some gathered for the Craſt Class to decorate T-Shirts. Te aſternoon was quieter as we watched the Awards given out for the Games. In the evening we gathered at the dinner and closing ceremonies all dressed up in our Chapter vests. Entertainment followed presented by Bernie and Red. Tey are always good for a fun time as we laughed at their RV jokes and sang along with some of the songs. Sunday morning dawned bright and sunny. Aſter the
memorial service, everyone packed up and headed home or onto other camping adventures. We look forward to seeing everyone at the 2012 BC Samboree
in Midway. 4
