The cream of the crop

We always enjoy receiving Hot Shots nominations in the Broadcast office. Inured to the press release quotes of our daily workload, each one signed off in triplicate until they become interchangeable, it is refreshing to hear bosses’ personal testimonies of their talented staff. Here you’ll find a young creative described as “so

modern he’s in a different time-space continuum to the rest of us”, while of one writer, it is touchingly said: “Children are lucky to have him writing for them.”

In an industry caricatured for its back-biting, it’s always heartening to

see the rising crop receiving a pat on the back from their bosses. Some entries address this with tongue in cheek: here you’ll see established writers claiming they “very much fear” the influence a young competitor will have, while of another Hot Shot, there is the acknowledgment: “He’ll be my boss one day, if he wants to.” Our entries demonstrate that the fast track from PA or runner to key decision-maker is still there for those with the right drive and tenacity. We’ve got tales of a young director spotting and seizing on a gripping story close to home and not letting go; a format developer setting up their own multiplatform company – see our first dedicated digital category for more; and further proof of Skins’ enviable ability to find talented teens and gradually beef up their roles into their early 20s. Congratulations to this year’s Hot Shots and thanks to the bosses who

have spotted their potential. Between submission and publication, one has received a promotion and another has been snapped up by a rival. Who’ll be next to climb the ladder? ➤ Robin Parker, Hot Shots editor
