V.A. Hospital Garage Adds Woven- Wire Mesh ‘Windows’ Facade Project leaders for the new Veterans Development LLC

Parking Garage in Cleveland selected woven-wire mesh for use on the building facade. Stainless steel Doka-Mono 1591 woven-wire mesh was chosen because they said it was affordable, functional and offered aesthetic value. Architect David A. Kaplan, LEED AP, ofKaczmar

Architects talks more about the decision to use the W.S. Tyler product: “With open parking structure design, ventilation is

important,” he said, “so we needed something that would provide air infiltration. However, we also wanted a ‘panel- ized’ look on the building that would provide more interest on the façade. “The mesh panels were located within a framework of

steel, and the intent was to have these look as abstract “win- dows’ on the building.…The [mesh] product works well on parking structures because it adapts to the dynamic move- ment that occurs with the loading ofthe structure with heavy vehicles. We liked that the mesh was part ofa whole system that accommodated the expansion and movement of the structure. “I personally also like how the panels pick up the sun-

light. The stainless steel fabric of the mesh provides some light reflectivity, which I think creates a very interesting effect as one travels past the building. …” The general contractor on the project was Donley’s Inc., with Burghardt Metal Fabricating as subcontractor.
