MAJOR MINOR MASH Give your solos an extra breath of air with some

dreamy sounding major seventh arpeggios…

Major 7 chords contain the same 3 notes (triad) as the standard Major chord but with an added 7th (7th note of the Major Scale), so CMaj7 would contain the notes CEGB. The 7th is only a semi tone away from the octave resulting in a mysterious, dreamy sound and used correctly can give a chord progression or solo a real breath of fresh air. If you’re worried we’re going to be soloing over ‘Lady In Red’ rather than Led Zeppelin? Don’t be! The notes of C Maj7 (CEGB) are all contained within the key of ‘A’ minor, and the Major 7th note ‘B’ is the relative 2nd or 9th in the A natural minor scale (ABCDEFG). The secret is that you can solo in good old A minor pentatonic, toss in the fresh sounding CMa7 arpeggios and get a unique blended resonance which is relative to the added 9th from A natural minor. Let’s learn some arpeggios and mash in some pentatonic licks!

Ex1: This C Major7 arpeggio is based around the A shaped chord. The lick combines the 1st pentatonic position in A minor with the C Maj7 arpeggio. The arpeggio starts with a wide hand span between the 7th and 3rd fret on the low E string. Listen out for the Major 7th (B) on the 4th fret G string, finish with a slide and open ‘A’ to complete the A minor theme.

Ex3: Based on the D Maj7 shape, play the chord using a bar with your 3rd or 4th finger. The pentatonic lick starts in the 3rd minor position. The semi tone bend on the 12th fret adds an eerie sounding ‘F’ note and ‘A’ natural minor. Finish with vibrato on the ‘A’ note 12th fret which firmly roots this lick mash back to the A minor key.

Ex2: This arpeggio takes its shape from the open Fmaj7 chord and contains a useful diagonal line for soloing. Pick out the Major 7th (B) notes and compare to the matching chord shape, use your thumb to play the root on the low E string and to block off the open ‘A’ string. TThe key note here is the 7th fret high ‘E’ string giving the Major 7th sound, equivalent to playing a 9th in ‘A’ minor.
