The best unsigned bands in the uk, and how to find them!

MOSES LUSTER AND THE HOLLYWOOD LIGHTS

ORIGINAL FIREPLACE

A bizarre mix of Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen and, somehow, a lounge singer! Moses’ story is as intriguing as his mildly humorous yet rather gripping music. Apparently, he was spotted playing in some strip casino in Las Vegas where he seemed down on his luck, but with a spark to the performance which overshadowed his appalling band. Between then and now he’s recorded an album and sounds like Tom Waits, with harmonicas, synths, folk-guitars being abrasively strummed and that sense of humour hidden behind that deadpan delivery. Definitely different. http://mosesluster.bandcamp.com

This core three piece from the UK have a feel which hints at Damon Albarn with snippets of Blur at their barest – acoustic guitars, but that same sense of dramatic emoting at times – or Playmusic fave Shoes and Socks Off with female backing vocals. The downbeat is cleverly dragged from the mire by the lift of the instruments, the vocal melodies being as textural and undulating as the tune allows. It’s not something we haven’t heard before, but it certainly is done extremely well. Their EP Health Visitor can be found on their Bandcamp page, below. I suggest you give it a good listen.

PSYCHIC BLOOD ARE QUITE HAPPY TO HANDLE MELODY, AS LONG AS THEY GET TO BLUDGEON IT INTO SUBMISSION!

YEARS OF RICE AND SALT

London’s Years of Rice and Salt know their post-rock, and whatever else can be easily held under the umbrella of post rock. That’s a lot of music. It’s instrumental, it contains guitars, drums, synth, piano, strings and brass. It’s dynamic, but in this case not quietLOUDquietLOUDER. It’s considered, mostly anticipatory, garnered with dramatic tones and subtleties. Nothing Of Cities is the title of their current album and it’s a blistering journey, one that builds you up, tears you down and then lovingly caresses your shattered bones. It’s an accomplishment to make instrumental music of this type and not simply throw every easy trick in the book at it. They let their songs breathe, echo, fade and ricochet. They sound all the better for it too.
