Looking Ahead
The IAS wants to build on its achievements in the first four years to ensure that research at Durham continues to be enhanced by interdisciplinary thinking; that the work of Durham University continues to be showcased on an international stage; that the IAS is seen as a leading Institute of Advanced Study internationally among scientists, social scientists and scholars in the humanities; that Durham University is on the map nationally and internationally as a venue and forum for high-level policy debates; and that cutting-edge research and ideas continue to be communicated to the public.
The IAS has continued to focus on these aims with its 2010-11 theme on ‘Futures.’ This brings to Durham the very best established and up- and-coming researchers and intellectuals from across the globe and from all disciplines. The Futures programme includes a wide range of interdisciplinary seminars, workshops, conferences and public lectures that covers a spectrum of ideas – from looking at the ways in which the future is ‘experienced' in the present, and how future experiences are shaped by the past, through to examining sustainable futures and the management of increasingly scarce natural resources.
2011-12 marks the IAS’s successful completion of five major themes: The Legacy of Charles Darwin, Modelling, Being Human, Water, and Futures. The IAS will build on this existing research to inform and drive Durham’s research programme into future areas of excellence. The Futures II year in 2011-12 will, therefore, develop the Fellowship programme around interdisciplinary ventures within Durham.
In its ambition to provide a thriving interdisciplinary research environment at Durham, the IAS is very appreciative of the support it receives from the senior officers at Durham University, from individuals within departments and colleges, without whose support there would be no IAS at Durham, and also the wise counsel of its distinguished Advisory Council.
The IAS is also very grateful to its Patrons, its Development Board and the private individual donors and the trusts and foundations who have generously supported the IAS Fellowship programme and IAS activities in 2009-10. Dunelm Society (Durham University’s Alumni Organisation) and the James Knott Trust continue to be generous in their support of the IAS Fellowship programme. And the international policy workshop on global water regulation, as well as a number of other significant workshops and conferences, could not have been fully realised without the financial support of Northumbrian Water, the IAS’s corporate partner during the 2009-10 Water year.
