Postgraduate Activities
The IAS provides research postgraduates and early-career researchers with a unique opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with some of the most distinguished international scholars.
As well as being able to access the full range of workshops, conferences and lectures sponsored by the IAS, postgraduate researchers are able to attend and present at dedicated postgraduate research seminars. This year, these included Ian Wright’s provocative question about whether there is such a thing as a galactic water cycle (see p.12 of this Report). Postgraduates are also invited to attend the specialised Fellows Seminars, in which Fellows advance new ideas from their current research for debate within the IAS community. In these ways, Fellows sow the seeds of new research agendas among the early-career researchers at Durham.
Six IAS Fellows also presented alongside postgraduates at two joint IAS-Ustinov Seminars hosted by the University’s dedicated postgraduate college. These included papers on a wide range of topics, such as water in the arctic, irrigation systems in Sri Lanka, and environmental ethics.
The culmination of the IAS’s postgraduate activities was the annual conference, which this year covered the idea of Cosmopoetics: Mediating a New World Poetics, the study and performance of contemporary poetry in conjunction with other art forms such as music. This conference (covered on p.28 of this Report) was organised by two postgraduate students from the Department of English Studies.
