‘I enjoyed being in Durham, interacting with colleagues of long-standing, meeting new scientists, and especially learning from other IAS Fellows in disciplines that I have rarely encountered in my home institution.’ Richard Arculus

Professor Richard J. Arculus Australian National University, Australia St. Mary’s College

Geologist Richard Arculus spent much of his Fellowship working with colleagues in Durham’s Department of Earth Sciences to develop two joint funding bids and future research projects, looking at the flow of the Earth’s mantle, and the way islands form at sites where tectonic plates converge.

Professor Andrew Baker University of Birmingham, UK University College

Andrew Baker’s research examines the palaeontology of stalagmites, which offers clues to the history of climate change. His IAS Fellowship enabled him to finalise books, research papers and funding bids on this theme.

Professor Christer Bruun University of Toronto, Canada Collingwood College

During his Fellowship, Christer Bruun’s studies of the social and cultural history of water in the Ancient Roman world turned to focus on radiation dating of ancient dental records in Ostia. He developed numerous papers during this time, whilst participating in conferences, seminars and research activities associated with Classics and Archaeology at Durham.

Dr Paola Ceccarelli Durham University

During Paola Ceccarelli’s Fellowship she organised an interdisciplinary workshop on ’Water and Identity’ for the IAS. The paper she delivered here formed part of an ongoing project looking at the Classical history of the Aegean sea, which will eventually culminate in a book.
