INDULGENCES mixology by brad hart

Where were you born and raised? I was born in Orange, California while my father was a Marine stationed at El Toro Air Base. My mother was a Navy brat. I lived in San Diego until I was 9 then spent the next 20 years in the Midwest, the vast majority in Omaha, Nebraska. How long have you been working at Babycakes? Christopher Stavros brought me on last October so it’s been about 9 months. I think that’s a record for me! (Laughs) When can we find you there? I bartend Wednesday through Saturday nights, as well as Sunday during our wildly successful promotion, “Church.” What do you enjoy most about bartending? Without a doubt it’s the people. I meet so many unique individuals with whom I get to share stories with; I consistently get to see things from an outside perspective. I’ve become a better person from doing this job; also I get to work with some fantastic personalities. It’s a home away from home. Babycakes has quite a creative and intriguing cocktail list. What are some of the more popular selections of “liquid sweets?” Well the Chunky Monkey and the Pink Squirrel are very popular—Not too sweet, not too creamy, just nice and smooth. The Grape Ape can go down fast because it tastes exactly like grape Kool-Aid. I’ve also started making my Chocolate Cake shots with vanilla frosting flavored vodka that makes them taste amazing! Does Babycakes have any special events planned in July and for Pride weekend? For Saturday we have the Pride Parade Party—we’re one block off the last leg of the parade route. We will be featuring our “Double Bubble” buy-one-get-one mimosas/Cham- pagne from 9 a.m.-3 p.m! Sunday is Church Pride—the place to be on Sunday afternoon Pride weekend with tons of Eye Candy and our ”Double Bubble” along with $3 cocktails, wine and beer from 3-8 p.m. What are some of your favorite things to do when you’re not bartending? I’m a bit of a gym rat, but have been slacking since we have been so BUSY! I do hope to get back soon. My grandmother is the reason I moved out here and I like to take her out to eat and do stuff around the house for her. I’m also looking forward to starting work on my masters degree again soon. What three words do you think your friends would choose to describe you? Genuine. Articulate. Kind. (Thanks, Christine) Tell us something people may be surprised to find out about you. I have a 2-0 professional Mixed Martial Arts record and many of my former training partners are established veterans currently under contract in the Ultimate Fighting Championships. I’ve never been one for violence, but the strategic value of the sport is much like chess. The cerebral side of fighting is what drew me toward it. The injuries and the developing cauliflower ear changed my mind—can’t go messing up my moneymaker now, can I? What are some things you are proud of? Fighting through some of the toughest times of my life to earn the title of United States Marine. I also won the “Heart of the Warrior” award for my last fight, which I basi- cally received for getting punched in the face an ungodly amount of times, yet somehow still managing to win.

BABYCAKES is located at 3766 Fifth Avenue and is open Monday through Sunday. For hours and information call 619.296.4173 or go to babycakessandiego.com
