Compelled to Connect Resources with Families A

Oh, what a dilemma! It is hard to comment on a friend’s child in a way that may be received as judging or critical. Any time you want to talk about

a difficult topic, I would recommend that you search your motives before you speak. If your motive is loving concern for your friend’s child, then your motive is in the right place. If your motive is something else, then it’s probably best not to say anything. When you’re ready to talk to her about it, start with your motive. “Carol, yesterday when Beth was speaking to me, I had a hard time understanding her. I know someone else whos 4 year old needed some articulation practice, and they were able to get a free assessment and then some help through their school district. They said that they were really thankful for the whole experience and that it was making a difference in their little girl’s life. Do you think Beth might benefit from something like that?” I personally wouldn’t go any further than that. Either your friend will be interested and ask you questions (remember, keep loving concern your motive) or she will say “Nothing is wrong with Beth’sspeech. I can understand everything she says!” It may be that you just need to plant a seed for your friend to think about – and if that is the case, that is okay. If her child truly has need for therapy, it will be identified when she begins school, so don’t fret!
