Society awards 11 social accountability grants T


he Good Samaritan Society is providing funding to 11 of its locations in Social Accountability grants.


Those receiving the awards and a description of the projects are:


Good Samaritan Society – Wagner in Wagner, S.D., for a community growth and beautification program. Award: $7,500.


Good Samaritan Society – Red Oak and Good Samaritan Society – Villisca in Red Oak and Villisca, Iowa, to help stock local food pantries so they can expand to serve low-income seniors. Award: $7,000.


Good Samaritan Society – Ottumwa in Ottumwa, Iowa, for Matter of Balance, a program designed to help the elderly prevent falls. Award: $5,327.


Good Samaritan Society – Alliance in Alliance, Neb., for the Bulldog Backpack Program, which provides food to needy elementary and middle school students on weekends and other times when school lunches and other resources are not available. Award: $7,000.


Beans and rice are frozen before being delivered to an orphanage in Juárez, Mexico. The Good Samaritan Society – Betty Dare coordinates the project with funding assistance from a Social Accountability grant.


Good Samaritan Society – Betty Dare in Alamogordo, N.M., to support operations of the center’s Beans and Rice food-packing project. Award: $4,000.


Good Samaritan Society – Olathe in Olathe, Kan., for the purchase of curriculum software for children in Liberia who were unable to attend school because of the country’s civil war. Award: $5,000.


Good Samaritan Society – Prophets Riverview in Prophetstown, Ill., to help start a Big Brothers Big Sisters program in the community. Award: $4,000.


Good Samaritan Society – Comforcare in Austin, Minn., to provide computers and televisions for the Comforcare Learning and Coffee Cafe. Award: $4,000.


Good Samaritan Society – Las Cruces Village in Las Cruces, N.M., to expand a project that provides blankets to children who have suffered trauma. Award: $3,000.


Good Samaritan Society – Davenport in Davenport, Iowa, for the restoration of the roof of a historic building on the Davenport campus.


Award: $1,000. Good Samaritan Society – West Union in West


Union, Iowa, to provide school supplies for students in need. Award: $400.


The Good Samaritan Society piloted its Social Accountability grant program in 2010 to encourage centers to develop projects that alleviate unmet community needs. 
