Gas and Oil Expo quickly approaching

CARRIE KELLY The Pipeline

A huge event featuring 500 companies and 20,000 registered attendees, the date for the Gas and Oil Expo is quickly arriving.

Scheduled for June 7 to 9 at Calgary’s Stampede Park, the exposition features the latest technology surrounding conventional and unconventional gas and oil.

James Harasen, president and CEO of H2Safety Services has booked a booth at the GO Expo for the first time. He plans to conduct interactive demonstrations of his Calgary company’s MARS system.

MARS stands for services mapping and response system and is software that assists companies in managing an emergency. It uses a graphic interface to allow the user to identify planning and response zones, determine the level of emergency and respond to the situation.

“It is a very easy-to-use system,” says Harasen. “We’ve rolled it out to a number of companies already to excellent reviews.”

Since most emergency plans are driven

around a focus on public safety, MARS instantly identifies who needs to be contacted within a potentially hazardous area.

“The system will contact people with custom messages and notify them of the hazard,” he explains.

It does it all in just a few minutes, instead of the hours it could take to individually call each landowner in the area to make them aware of an emergency situation. A text-to- voice system sends out a phone message in conjunction with an e-mail message. An easy-to-read map of who was contacted and what their response was is catalogued.

But MARS benefits energy companies even in non-emergency situations.

“If they are doing a construction project in the area, they may use the system to notify the residents in the area,” Harasen suggests.

The MARS system is just some of the new technology that will be highlighted at the Gas and Oil Expo that allow companies to work more efficiently.

In conjunction with the GO Expo is the Global

Petroleum Career Expo, which takes place June 8 to 9.

One of the companies that will be there looking to recruit new employees is Enerplus. The company has been using social media such as Facebook and LinkedIn to fill positions, but is also hoping to meet some potential employees face-to-face at the Career Expo.

“We have about 52 vacancies right now,” says Jennifer Koury, vice president of corporate services for Enerplus. “We are just starting to see the industry heat up in terms of recruitment and we want to make sure people know who we are. We need technical skills.”

The company, which has a diversified portfolio of crude oil and natural gas assets, has about 1,000 employees and is looking to fill positions in both Denver and Calgary. They are in need of geologists, geophysicists, reservoir engineers and petroleum engineers.

Other companies confirmed for the Career Expo include Nexen, Canadian Natural Resources Ltd., Chevron, SNC Lavalin and Cenovus.
