The Debolt Water Treatment Project shows water stewardship in practice. Apache Canada and Encana partnered to build the water treatment plant and have received an Environmental Performance Award from the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers.

surface water and now have an integrated water treatment and distribution system that allows for full recovery and re- use of fracture fluids.

The Debolt Water Treatment Project plant currently fulfills 80 per cent of Apache and Encana’s water supply needs for hydraulic fracturing operations in the Two Island Lake area.

Kevin Screen, manager of Apache’s Horn River business unit, expects that number to grow.

“The first measure of success is the amount by which we actually reduce our fresh water requirement. In the first two months of 2011, we are in excess of 90 percent Debolt water. Our target is to be above 95 per cent Debolt water for our completion operation,” he says.

Encana and Apache have a unique relationship, says Graham Carter, senior facilities engineer on the project for Apache.

“Another measure of success is our relationship with Encana. As companies that are normally regarded as competitors, we really came together to work together

toward a common solution,” he says.

The Responsible Canadian Energy (RCE) program also included a Health and Safety Award, presented to Shell Canada for 43 million hours without a lost time incident.

Earlier this year, the Athabasca Oil Sands Project’s (AOSP) Expansion 1 project passed an historic milestone of 43 million hours without a lost time incident (LTI).

The AOSP Expansion project included both an upstream oilsands mine expansion and an upgrader expansion project. The mine expansion project took place at Jackpine Mine, north of Fort McMurray. The upgrader expansion project was a 100,000 barrel per day expansion of the existing Scotford upgrader, near Fort Saskatchewan. At the project’s peak, the construction workforce consisted of more than 15,000 people.

Shell puts its value on safety into practice through the Goal Zero initiative — insistently pursuing no harm to people and no significant incidents.

“We, as a company, are very proud of our performance, but more importantly we’re proud

of the people that put the effort into this performance,” says Winston Fynn, Health Safety and Environment manager. “A key belief I have is that you have to look after the people in order for the statistics to look after themselves.”

The Social Performance award was given to Statoil Canada for its local opportunity centre, established at Conklin Corner.

The CAPP President’s Award went to Suncor Energy for its tailings management process.
