per cent and Inpex Canada holding 10 per cent. Suncor will also receive approximately $1.75 billion from the transaction.


Total acquired a 49 per cent interest in Suncor's Voyageur upgrader and upon completion, Suncor will operate the planned 200,000-barrel-per-day facility. Total also acquired a portion of Suncor's interest in the Fort Hills oilsands project.


Suncor and Total have agreed to develop the Fort Hills mine and Voyageur upgrader in parallel, so that both come on stream in 2016.


Nexen donates to Japan


As the death toll rises along with the cost to rebuild much of Japan following the devastating earthquake and tsunami on March 11, Nexen has made a corporate grant of $50,000 to the Japanese Red Cross Society.


“Like everyone around the world, we have been watching with sorrow as the crisis deepens in Japan and wish to aid relief efforts,” explains Pierre Alvarez, Vice- President, Corporate Relations. “We also have important business partnerships with organizations in Japan whose employees have been affected by this tragedy. By


making this grant, we’re doing what we can to assist our Japanese stakeholders.”


Meanwhile, Nexen employees have been generously making personal donations to aid in the relief efforts. Nexen’s Employee Matching Gift program matches contributions to registered charitable or not-for- profit organizations that meet corporate matching gift guidelines, up to a maximum of $20,000 per individual, in any one calendar year.


Premier fights back


Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach wrote a letter criticizing the New York Times for its editorial slamming the


Keystone XL Pipeline.


In his letter, Stelmach said the Times used erroneous information about the Alberta oilsands.


“Canadian oil has clear benefits,” Stelmach wrote. “From a trade perspective, for every American dollar spent in Canada, 91 cents is returned to the American economy. Canadian energy development makes extensive use of U.S. products, technologies and expertise, creating a significant number of jobs. A study by the Canadian Energy Research Institute estimated oilsands production will create more than 342,000 U.S. jobs between 2011 and 2015.”
