With even U.S. president Barack Obama suggesting Alberta’s oil is potentially “destructive,” there’s no question the energy industry is often looked at with a critical eye.


Yet behind the scenes, the industry is putting programs and infrastructure in place that counteracts the message of environmental annihilation.


The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) recently recognized several companies through its Responsible Canadian Energy (RCE) program.


“Our industry is committed to continuous performance improvement, measuring results and assessing – in an open, transparent manner – where we need to improve,” says CAPP president Dave Collyer. “Each year, we recognize the innovative actions of companies that


continue to believe ‘good’ is just not good enough.”


Apache Canada and Encana Corp. received the environmental performance award for water stewardship in practice.


Apache and Encana formed a partnership in 2007 to develop infrastructure that would help reduce the environmental impact in the Horn River Basin in B.C.


Tests results showed the Debolt water reservoir was a deep, sub-surface non- potable aquifer capable of supplying water for hydraulic fracturing operations in the area.


Wanting to reduce dependence on fresh surface water, Apache and Encana began laboratory testing and field trials, which resulted in construction of a full-scale plant. The first of its kind water treatment plant went into operation in June 2010.
