Saskatchewan Oil and Gas Show to be held in Weyburn

CARRIE KELLY The Pipeline

With so much interest in Saskatchewan’s oil industry of late, a large crowd is expected to attend the Oil and Gas Show in Weyburn June 1 and 2.

The show, held every second year, gets bigger all the time, just as the energy industry in Saskatchewan continues to get busier.

“I have been in the industry since 1974 and we have never seen the activity level we are seeing now,” says Ron Carson, chair of the Saskatchewan Oil and Gas Show and owner of Carson Energy Services.

The show always sells out its exhibition space far in advance of the June show. This year, 180 companies are on the waiting list wishing to exhibit. Indoor and outdoor displays will provide people with information on the newest technology and provide an opportunity to network with potential new clients.

“If you want to know what’s going on in the energy industry, you will know after leaving there,” Carson says.

With free admission, the show not only attracts those in the industry, but those in the community who are interested in learning more

about oil and gas.

“It’s a good place to see what’s out there. It’s an eye opener for those not in the industry,” he says.

In addition to the exhibition, the event features a golf tournament, industry seminars, the launch of the PSAC (Petroleum Services Association of Canada) Community Partners Program and keynote speakers.

“We have the Saskatchewan premier and the energy minister as guest speakers,” Carson says.

The energy industry in Saskatchewan is growing mainly due to the Bakken oil play. But the Shaunavon oil play is also receiving a great deal of attention lately.

It is credited with significantly boosting revenue for the latest sale of Crown petroleum and natural gas rights.

The Shaunavon play accounted for more than half the total in April's land sale, which brought in $109 million for the province.

"This was a great sale, based on both the quantity and the quality of the bids we received," says Energy and Resources Minister Bill Boyd, who will be speaking at the Oil and Gas Show. "We had the usual strong interest in the Bakken play, but our rich oil resources in the southwest are obviously causing a stir in the industry.”

"Land sales are a key barometer of future activity in the industry, and based on what we've seen over the last 15 months from our sales, the forecast is very bright indeed for increased investment by the industry – investment that results in jobs and prosperity for the people of Saskatchewan."

April's sale included 16 petroleum and natural gas exploration licences that sold for $26.2 million and 311 lease parcels that attracted $82.5 million in bonus bids.

The Swift Current area, on the strength of the Shaunavon play, received the most bids with sales of $56.6 million. The Weyburn-Estevan area was next at $40.4 million.
