Finally, a commonly reported drawback of the dealer channel was a perceived lack of transparency with regard to pricing compared to the auction channel, and felt dealers often manipulated flows of information so that buyers were not fully informed. An example cited by a number of collectors was the lack of information on how long an item had been on sale, whether they were the first person to view it and if it had been turned down by other previous collectors.
The other less frequently cited disadvantages related to dishonesty or lack of trust with certain individual dealers, restricted choice due to slow moving inventory or their degree of specialisation, and some more specific issue in relation to poor or over-restoration of works.
Collectors were also asked to pinpoint what they perceived as the most important role for dealers in building their art and antiques collections. While the highest response was assigned to the straightforward role of vendor from which to buy and sell, 28% of collectors felt the key role was in verifying the authenticity of works, while 18% felt it was acting as an advisor on the quality and artistic value of which particular works to buy.
