GETTING STARTED ON THE BIKE You don’t have to buy a triathlon

bike to start with. According to triathlon coach Russell Cox (www.coachcox.co.uk), most of the beginners’ triathlons allow mountain bikes. “You could put thinner tyres or smoother tyres on your mountain bike if you want it to pick up some speed,” says Russell. “If you decide you want to progress with more triathlons, it might be worth investing in a road bike as you will get a better selection of gears and they’re designed to be more comfortable.” A good quality entry level bike will cost about £500.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT SWIMMING GEAR If your event is pool-based, your basic swimming kit is your swimming costume and goggles. However, you will have to cycle and run after the swim, so it might be worth investing in some triathlon shorts with a bit of padding.
