ASSOCIATE COUNCIL NEWS Finding Success M

y son and I were looking through our DVD library the other day searching

for a good inspirational movie. We looked at movies like “Rocky” and “The Karate Kid” and a couple that were based on true stories like “The Blind Side” and “Radio” before settling on “Cinderella Man,” the story of a boxer who fought to keep his family together during the Great Depression.

After the movie I began catching up on emails and reading through national headlines regarding the homebuilding industry. Depending on where you live and who you listened to, the industry could be getting better! This made me think of all the movies we looked through earlier and the one thing they all had in common—all the characters were special. They all had what it took to become champions, they just needed a reason to fight, a mentor or friend to help them through tough times. And they all TRAINED to get better!

ANNUAL SPONSOR

How many of you, over the last couple of years during this struggling time in the industry, have gone back to school to finish a degree or studied something different? How many of you have completed an NAHB designation class? Has your company implemented a new training program or handed out self-help books?

I recently participated in the NAHB’s Train the Trainer class at the GHBA. The class only had eight participants, and only three were from the Houston area. This is one of the best classes to take if you ever have to give a presentation or speak in public. There are some great classes scheduled at the GHBA

38 MAY 2011 | HOUSTON BUILDER | GREATER HOUSTON BUILDERS ASSOCIATION – BUILDING A BETTER FUTURE

all year long, so take advantage of what our association has to offer. I can tell you that the GHBA has one of the best class calendars of any HBA across the country.

Take advantage of the many networking opportunities the GHBA has to offer as well. Get involved with a committee and sign up for a designation class. Remember, in order to be the best at anything (sales, customer service, presentations) you must continue to practice and train.

The road to one’s success is always under construction and the future belongs to those who prepare for it.
