in the KJB version. Similarly, the power of Handel’s music is well matched by the scriptural words of the Messiah.
It may well be that no other translation matches the lofty language of the KJB. However, intelligibility is important too; the narrative can be followed relatively easily in Jacobean prose but the tight turns in the Apostle Paul’s arguments are another thing.
For a time it was thought that the genre of Greek that is used in the NT (Koine) was a special religious form – scholars now know that it was the rough and ready lingua franca of the time, rather than the Classical Greek of Plato and Aristotle.
Tyndale and the translators of the KJB were aiming to make plain God’s written word to people who had never been allowed to hear it in their ‘heart language.’
