Ask the Vicar –

What’s all the fuss about the King James Bible?

This year we celebrate 500 years since the publication of the King James Bible (KJB), sometimes called the Authorised Version. For Parish Link Readers there is a local connection – it was at the Hampton Court Conference in 1604 that King James I seized upon Bishop Reynold’s suggestion of a new Bible translation.

The KJB was not the first English Bible. Its most significant predecessor was the work of William Tyndale. He was a most able linguist – fluent in eight languages. He translated both Old Testament and New Testament in Henry VIII’s reign.

Importantly he set out to produce a Bible that would use everyday English. When attacked by a priest Tyndale famously replied: ‘If God spare my life, before very long I shall cause a ploughboy to know the scriptures better than you do!’
