Table 1 Plain Hunt on eight

This swapping process is repeated until, at row seventeen, the bells return to rounds. A set of changes like those in the table is known as a touch.

I have highlighted bells 1 and 8 to show how they appear to move through the changes in a regular pattern and indeed how the pattern for bell 8 is the mirror of that followed by bell 1.

In fact, all the bells follow similar patterns, albeit starting at different places. Change ringers learn these patterns, rather than the changes themselves.

Table 1 represents one method of generating changes and produces 16. However, on eight bells there is a total of 40,320 possible changes! To produce even a reasonable number of these, say a few hundred, much more elaborate methods are used, but an explanation of these is beyond the scope of this article.

Although the full 40,320 changes have been rung a few times, requiring some eighteen hours of non-stop ringing, the greatest number of changes most ringers aspire to ring is 5040 which take about three hours. This number of changes is known as a peal.

15

Quarter peals of 1260 changes are also rung. However, for normal service and practice night ringing, much shorter touches are used.
