attending the World Cup this summer and meet a Canadian who says, “You really must visit the Okanagan Valley in BC, Canada,” Lufthansa offers a great fare and flights through their Star Alliance partnership to fly you from Cape Town to Kelowna International Airport.

The airport is also working with its airline partners to create more direct same plane flights in and out of Kelowna. You can now fly direct to and from Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Fort McMurray, Hamilton and Ottawa without having to change planes. This is one of the initial steps to develop

new nonstop market opportunities and at the same time provide travellers with a more convenient flight without the need to change planes. Many popular nonstop routes to and from Kelowna are also supported by additional same plane direct flights. WestJet, for example, has a direct flight every afternoon to Toronto Pearson Airport from Kelowna to support their morning nonstop; Air Canada introduced twice a day direct flights to Edmonton International in May, 2010, and you’ll find direct flights to Prince George Airport that are in addition to the daily 7:20 am Central Mountain Air nonstop flight.

As passenger demand grows at YLW, there is potential to offer additional flights between Kelowna and destinations in the United States and Europe. “For these flights to become available, the airline needs sufficient numbers of passengers wanting to travel out of Kelowna to warrant those services,” points out Airport Director, Sam Samaddar. “Typically, scheduled air service on long haul markets requires frequency of a flight per day with a minimum frequency of five flights per week. There currently are not

enough passengers in the Kelowna market to support this type of service. However, seasonal charter service from a major European hub such as Frankfurt or London could certainly be viable, especially during the winter ski season.”

Air service development never sits still and Kelowna International Airport is in discussion with its airline partners to seek nonstop service to and from another major US hub that will connect centres in the eastern and southeastern United States with Kelowna. Building on the popular Kelowna/Mexico connection, opportunities for new winter charter destinations are being discussed with the major tour wholesalers. More direct plane service to Canadian cities is being discussed on a regular basis with each airline as well as turning some of the direct plane services into nonstop services.

“Behind every decision to pursue specific air service markets is careful research and planning to ensure we’re serving our customers in the best way possible, that is also sustainable for the air carrier,” says Samaddar.
