CAMP DAY for Kids
Airport Administration staff, Airport Operations Specialists, Air Canada Jazz employees and Kelowna City Councillor Kevin Craig all stepped out of their comfort zone and volunteered their time to pour coffee and serve soup, sandwiches and donuts to Tim Hortons customers all for a good cause. Camp Day is the one day a year when Tim Hortons store owners across Canada and the United States donate every penny from coffee sales to the Tim Hortons Children’s Foundation. In 2009, Camp Day raised more than $9.4 million. Every time a customer buys a coffee at Tim Hortons on Camp Day they will help send more than 14,000 kids - who could otherwise not afford it - on the camping adventure of a lifetime. All children who attend one of the Foundation’s six camps are selected from within the communities where Tim Hortons stores are located. Tim Hortons store owners work closely with local youth organizations and schools to select children, between the ages of nine and 12, to attend a 10-day summer camp session or seven day winter camp session.
Westbank First Nation Art and Culture Display at YLW
In front of members of the Westbank First Nation (WFN) Council and staff, Airport Advisory Committee and airport staff a display cabinet celebrating the celebrating the Westbank First Nation and those who are members of the Okanagan Syilx people was unveiled in the US departures room at Kelowna International Airport (YLW).
“This display of the Westbank First Nation history, art and culture for passengers to enjoy at Kelowna International Airport is an excellent opportunity to showcase an important part of the Okanagan history,” said Airport Advisory Chair Mayor Sharon Shepherd. “The Okanagan territory extends south into Washington State so having this case in the US departures room is very appropriate.”
“The art pieces and historical information in the display case will be changed every six months,” explained Airport Director Sam Samaddar.
“WFN is most appreciative for the opportunity to showcase our culture at the airport so that others can learn about who we were, who we are and who we hope to be,” said Westbank First Nation Chief Robert Louie.
In addition to the newly install WFN wall display, Kelowna International Airport has partnerships with Kelowna Museum and the Kelowna Art Gallery, both displaying Okanagan history and art in various areas of the terminal for passengers to enjoy when using YLW.
