English folk music is limited to dirges”. Te Sail Patern’s music and in particular their live show appeals to people of all ages, and the accessibility of the songs takes them beyond folk as a genre. James adds: “I love the interaction with the audience, I like seeing our music being received well, and inciting some kind of emotional response in the audience... preferably a cheerful one”. Regardless of genre boundaries, the band love to feel that their music gets the audience in- volved, and playing shanties, where the emphasis lies on the group rather than a “singer and backing vocals” adds to the inclusive feeling of their shows. Te band is quietly optimistic about their future and the ambition to make a living from something they really love rings true for all the boys. Te boys take pride in always being prepared, though a hardwor- king and down to earth ethos doesn’t stop them from having fun along the way. With a few festival appearances lined up for summer, including Holmfirth Folk Festival (from May 6th), and a whole load of gigs, Te Sail Patern are always looking to play their music further afield and are hoping to take their experiences so far and project them onto a larger scale. Whatever the future may hold for the band, their simple mantra of playing music they enjoy will stay with them, no mater where the wind takes them.
